South Korea's little firefighting robots 한국의 소형 소방 로봇들
Hoya Robot has developed a Firefighters Assistance Robot (dubbed a Fire Spy Robot), a remote-controlled device that can reconnoiter a burning structure, transmitting images, sounds, and data on temperature, smoke, and gas to firefighters over 50 yards away. This kind of information is vital for firefighters to ensure their safety before entering a burning structure. 호야로봇사는 소방수 보조 로봇(파이어 스파이 로봇이라 명명됨)을 개발했는데, 「온도와 연기 및 소방관에 유해한 가스」에 대한 이미지와 사운드 및 데이타를 50야드 밖에 있는 소방수에게 전송하면서, 화재가 발생한 건물을 정찰할 수 있는, 리모트 콘트롤로 조정되는 고안품이다.
The little two-wheeled robot can roam through the blaze spraying water from a fire hose and looking for trapped people. Its onboard light and camera helps firefighters pinpoint people before they enter the building themselves. The robot also gives them enough information to decide on the safe routes, and quickly develop a rescue plan. 두 개의 소형 바퀴가 달린 이 로봇은, 소방 호수로 물을 분사하고, 갖혀있는 사람들을 찾아다니며, 화염 속을 이동할 수 있다. 로봇 내부에 장착된 조명장치와 카메라는 소방수들이 직접 빌딩으로 투입되기 전, 소방수들이 사람의 위치를 정확히 지정하는 데 도움을 준다. 또한 이 로봇은 소방수들에게 안전한 동선을 결정할 수 있는 충분한 정보를 제공하며, 빠른 시간 내에 구조 계획을 세우도록 한다.
The Firefighters Assistance Robot is a small device resembling a miniature tank and measuring just 12.5 cm in diameter and weighing 2 kg. It can travel at 1 foot per second and withstand a fall of over six feet. It can also survive temperatures as high as 160 C (320 F). The operating time of the robot inside a burning structure is up to 30 minutes. 이 소방수 보조 로봇은 모형 탱크와 닮았고 지름이 고작 12.5cm이며 무게가 2kg밖에 되지 않는 소형 고안품이다. 이 로봇은 초당 1피트로 이동할 수 있고 6피트 이상 높이에서 낙하하는 것을 견딜 수 있다. 또한 이 로봇은 섭씨 160도(화씨 320도)의 고온에서도 작동된다. 로봇이 불타고 있는 건물에서 작동되는 시간은 30분에 달한다.
Meanwhile, another company, DRB Fatec, has developed its own firefighting helper robot. Their model is larger than the Hoya Robot device, standing at 88 cm high and 85 cm wide. It is also tougher, being built for much larger fires, and is apparently able to withstand temperatures up to 500 C (920 F) for an hour or more. 한편, 또 다른 회사인 DRB파텍은 그들만의 독자적인 소방 보조 로봇을 개발했다. 이 회사의 모델은 호야로봇사의 고안품보다는 크다. 높이 88cm에 폭 85cm이다. 또한 대형 화재를 위해 제작됐는데 더 튼튼하고 섭씨 500도(화씨 920도)의 고온에서 한 시간 혹은 그 이상 확실히 견딜 수 있을 것이다.
It took two years to develop these mini robots, with financial aid from South Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The robots will be tested in fire stations in Daegu, south of Seoul in South Korea from now until November this year. 이런 소형 로봇들을 개발하는데 2년이 소요됐으며, 한국 지식경제부의 재정적 지원을 받았다. 이 로봇들은 한국의 서울 남부에 있는 대구에서 올해 11월까지 실험될 것이다.

Tarkaan Yeah, this is totally cool if the firetrucks could actually *get* to the fire... with all the illegal and careless parking, narrow alleys, and buildings that haven't seen a coat of paint since the war, it's a wonder the whole place doesn't burn to the ground. I saw an ambulance literally not be able to get to a patient in time because so many people were illegally parked. They couldn't reverse because traffic wouldn't let them out. The paras had to grab a stretcher (not the gurney), and run. This was on a Korean "COPS" like show. 이야, 만약 이 소방차들이 정말 화재 현장에 접근할 수 있다면... 이건 정말 멋진 일이겠구나... 모든 불법적이고 부주의하게 주차된 공간, 좁은 골목들, 그리고 전쟁 이후 페인트질을 하지 않은듯한 빌딩 숲에서, 모든 장소가 홀딱 타버리지 않는 게 놀라운 일이지. 나는, 많은 사람들이 불법 주차를 했기 때문에, 앰블런스가 문자 그대로 환자를 제 시간에 병원에 후송하지 못하는 것을 목격했어. 교통 상황이 허락하지 않아서, 그들은 역주행할 수 없었으니까. 구조대원들은 (「바퀴달린 들것」이 아니라) 「천으로 된 들것」을 잡고 뛰어야만 했지. 동영상처럼 이런 일은 코리안캅(로보캅에서 따온 말)에 맡기면 되겠구나.
