It is fitting perhaps that the Lion King could be set to reemerge on the global stage in Africa next year. If there was an Asian golden boot, then Lee Dong-gook would be in line to win it this season. In some ways, it is a surprise. Park Chu-young is rejecting big-money offers from French teams, Lee Keun-ho is scoring up a storm in Japan, Kim Yong-hu just scored six games in a row, and Choi sung-kuk and Kim Myung-joong have had great seasons for Gwangju. It does seem an easy excuse, given the fact that Lee is scoring at a rate rarely seen in Korea. His record in England with Middlesbrough is perhaps partly responsible. After initial excitement in Korea at the Lion King’s transfer to Teesside, his lack of goals, then minutes, meant that he slowly exited the public consciousness. Lee is a strong character, however, and has resolved to use his time in the west in the best way possible. "I was at Middlesbrough for 18 months and it was a meaningful time," Lee said upon his return home. "I don't think that it was wasted time. I did my best. I got some good experience and have no regrets about my time in England. But Lee is back among the goals, in the headlines, in the public’s consciousness, and it is probably only a matter of time before he is back in the national team.
