mountaineer Not much further from that park is Mt. Sorak. The breathtaking scenery of Mt. Sorak, which boasts a unique natural setting each season, is well-known. I am not a professional mountaineer, but I like to climb mountain hike and be outdoors because the 'actual' going up the mountain is challenging. I'm fond of climbing mountain, especially where I have to be completely absorbed in the exotic atmosphere, though it is always attended with danger. So my friends and I decided to go up Mt. Seorak, of which our motel commanded a good view, on my trip to South Korea. We set out on a venturesome journey across the mountains. 저 공원에서 멀지 않은 곳에 설악산이 있어. 설악산은 계절마다 독특한 경관을 자랑하는데 숨막힐 듯 아름다운 풍경은 유명해. 비록 내가 프로 등반가는 아니어도 산을 오르고 야외 활동을 하는 것을 즐겨. 왜냐하면 산에 오르는 것 '자체'가 일종의 도전이기 때문이지. 나는 산에 오르는 걸 좋아해. 특히 이국적 정취에 흠뻑 빠질 수 있는 그런 산 말이야. 비록 등산에는 위험이 따르기 마련이지만. 그래서 나와 내 친구들은 한국 여행 도중 우리가 머물던 모텔에서 잘 보이던 설악산에 오르기로 결심했어. 우린 그 산을 넘는 모험적인 여행을 시작했지. I don't know how to give __EXPRESSION__ to that place, but it was full of exotic flavors. A narrow path led on through the hills 'with twists and turns', and tracks led up the mountainside. At first, the weather was a little muggy and without a breath of wind. Sweat dripped down as I sat in the scorching sun. However sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions can take place as we go up the mountain. A thick fog hung around the middle of the mountain. All at once, the overcast sky turned black as the Ace of Spade. No one had come up the mountain in the last 5 or 6 hours. 저 산을 어떻게 표현해야 할 지는 모르겠지만, 이국적인 정취가 물씬 풍겼지. 좁은 길이 산을 '꼬부랑 꼬부랑' 누비고 있었고 산길은 산비탈을 따라 올라가고 있었지. 처음엔 바람 한 점 없고 제법 무더운 날씨였어. 땡볕에 앉아 있었더니 땀이 주르르 흘렀지. 그러나 산을 오를 때는 기온과 날씨 상태가 갑작스럽게 변할 수 있는 법. 산 중턱에는 안개가 자욱하게 서려 있었어. 먹구름이 낀 하늘은 갑자기 칠흑같이 어두워졌지. 산을 올라오는 사람이 대여섯시간째 아무도 없었어. The mountaintop was shrouded in foggy mist and a vast plain unfolding before it was shrouded in misty fog. At the outset, it looked like a nice day. However. abruptly, a gale began to blow from the east. This gale messed our hairs up and a gust of wind shook a multitude of leaves off the trees. Soon, the lightning crackled in the black skies, and then it flashed and the thunder filled the air. A fine drizzle began to veil the hills. We had to camp halfway up the mountain. However active and dynamic air movement is causing heavier clouds and making powerful thunderstorms. Everything happened as slick as nothing at all. 산 정상은 희뿌연 안개로 덮여 있었고 산 앞에 펼쳐진 광대한 대지도 희뿌연 안개로 덮여 있었어. 시초에는 날씨가 좋은 것 같았지. 그러나 갑자기 동쪽에서 돌풍이 불어오기 시작했어. 강풍이 우리 머리를 헝클어 뜨렸고 나뭇잎이 바람에 우수수 떨어졌지. 곧 번개가 까만 하늘을 가르더군. 번개가 번쩍하자 천둥 소리가 울렸어. 고운 가랑비에 산들이 가려지기 시작했고. 결국 우리는 산 중턱에 텐트를 칠 수밖에 없었지. 그러나 활동적이고 힘찬 대기의 움직임은 더 무거운 구름을 만들고 강한 뇌우를 만들고 있었어. 모든 것은 한순간에 일어났지. The drizzling raindrops grew bigger and bigger and a light drizzle developed into a heavy rain. I couldn't see my own hand in the torrential downpour. The heavy rainfall caused the valley to overflow. A gust of wind blew our big umbrella inside out, my back was damp with sweat, and my hair was wet with raindrop. To make matters worse, the rain turned to sleet out of the blue. We had to break camp because we pulled the rope taut but our tent would sag. We ran for cover. As we was rushing down the mountain, I banged my knee on a rock. As it turned out, it's a hairline- fracture. My friend had a light abrasion on his right arm and had to rub a ointment in well on the cut everyday.. 조금씩 내리던 빗방울이 점점 굵어졌고 가랑비가 폭우로 변하더군. 폭우로 한 치 앞도 보이지 않았지. 호우로 계곡이 넘쳤어. 돌풍으로 우리의 큰 우산이 뒤집어졌고, 내 등골은 땀으로 축축해졌으며, 내 머리는 빗방울로 축축해졌지. 설상가상으로 비가 갑자기 진눈깨비로 바뀌기까지 했어. 로프를 팽팽히 당겼지만 텐트가 쳐졌기 때문에 텐트를 걷을 수밖에 없었지. 우린 비를 피할 곳을 찾아 뛰었어. 우리가 산을 급하게 내려올 때 나는 바위에 무릎을 짓찧어 버렸지. 나중에 알았지만, 가느다란-골절(금이 갔음)이었어. 내 친구는 오른팔에 가벼운 찰과상을 입어서 매일 연고를 상처에 잘 발라야 했지. There was an empty cabin which looked out over a bleak and desolate landscape, just when we needed it. That cabin, roofed over with tin, was made of knotty pine. We dashed into the cottage -which was cold and damp-to get out of the rain. The old shack smells of damp. There's a staircase at both ends of the corridor. That glass looked as pellucid as nothing was here but really nothing was here. :)) The hut had no cooking or sanitary facilities. Hail was hammering down onto the roof, which was leaking rain. I was worried something may be wrong with either the wiring or the fixture. So we set up the tent in this hut again. 때마침 황량하고 쓸쓸한 풍경에 면해 있는 빈 오두막집이 있더군. 지붕이 함석으로 된 오두막은 얽히고 섥힌(마디가 많은) 소나무로 만들어진 거였어. 우리는 비를 피하려고 그 춥고 눅눅한 오두막집으로 들어갔어. 그 고가에서는 눅눅한 냄새가 나더군. 복도의 양쪽 끝에 계단이 나 있었어. 유리가 넘 투명해서 아무 것도 없는 것 같았는데 실제로 아무 것도 없었지.ㅋㅋ 그 오두막에는 조리 시설도 위생 시설도 없었고. 지붕 위로 우박이 우수수 떨어졌는데 지붕에서 빗물이 샜어. 나는 배선이나 설비에 무슨 문제가 있을까 걱정이 되기도 했지. 그래서 우리는 그 집 안에 텐트를 다시 쳤지. Climbers were sparse maybe because it's a weekday. But after a few hours, other peoples who had taken shelter from the storm was coming here. They all were Koreans and municipal workers. We came on after a few minutes, though their English left something to be desired lol. When you've been climbing for hours, there's a tremendous sense of 'camaraderie', when you meet other climbers. They brewed a pot of coffee for us. We rhapsodized about starry nights and snowy days in the mountain area. After disposing of the trash, we disported ourselves the freedom of living in the country like the deposed king or the deported president a short while. 등산객들이 거의 없었는데 아마 주중이었기 때문일꺼야. 그렇지만 몇 시간 정도 지나서 폭풍우를 피할 곳을 찾던 다른 사람들이 여기로 왔어. 그들 모두는 한국인이었고 지방자치제 직원들이었지. 비록 그들은 서투른 영어를 구사했지만ㅋㅋ 우린 몇 분 지나고 나서 금새 친해졌지. 몇 시간 동안 산을 오르다가 다른 등반자를 만났을 때 엄청난 '동지애'의 감정을 느끼게 돼거든. 그들은 우리를 위해 한 주전자의 커피를 끓여줬지. 우리는 산 속에서 별이 빛나는 밤이나 눈이 내리는 날에 대해서 이야기했어. 쓰레기를 처리한 뒤, 우린 폐위된 왕 혹은 추방당한 대통령처럼 잠시나마 전원 생활의 편안함을 즐겼지. It began to blow a gale at night into the bargain, in a few hours there was an mist which presaged a fine day. And the following morning, we had a sunny day with beautiful skies and no clouds. But we had to worry about weather because winds were prevalent in this district and we can expect wind, cold, and damp-and-chilly-fogs at the top though it was warm here. However we determined to reach the top. We ate enough, drank lots of fluids, and got plenty of sleep. Mountaineering involves more physical exercise than you might think so you need to be robust to climb mountain. Hence mountain climbers need plenty of good fresh food to nourish them. 밤이 되자 덤으로 큰 폭풍이 몰아치기 시작했지만, 몇 시간 후 청명한 날씨를 예고하는 안개가 끼었어. 그리고 다음 날 아침이 되자 구름 한 점 없는 맑은 날씨가 됐지. 그러나 우리는 날씨 걱정을 많이 할 수밖에 없었어. 왜냐하면 이 지방(강원도)은 바람이 많고 아래는 따뜻하더라도, 산 정상에는 바람, 추위, 축축하고 차가운 안개가 예상됐으니까. 그렇지만 우리는 정상에 가기로 결심했어. 우리는 충분히 먹고, 물을 많이 마셨으며, 잠도 충분히 잤어. 등산은 생각보다 운동량이 많이 필요해. 그래서 등산을 하려면 건강해야지. 그러니 등산가들에게는 그들에게 영양을 공급할 양질의 신선한 음식이 필요한 것이고. Anyway we scrambled up the rocky mountain. We were doing a lot of perspiring. When I perspired profuse-ly, I became thirsty soon. Finally we climbed to the summit and looked down the mountain. After a hard climb, we were rewarded by a picture-postcard vista of rolling hills, under a deep blue sky. We were so happy on our way down the mountain though it was difficult to come down the mountain because our legs had gone rubbery. I was so touched I was getting misty-eyed though I got a cramp in my leg and felt a painful muscle spasm. We yelled until we were hoarse. It took 3 days to hike along the ridges of Mt. Seorak and I believe we had such a blissful time. 어쨌든 바위산을 기어올라갔어. 우린 땀을 많이도 흘리고 있었지. 땀을 너무 많이 흘리니까 금새 목이 마르더라구. 마침내 정상에 올라서서 산 아래를 내려다 보았지. 어렵게 산을 오른 이후, 우리는 진한 푸른색 하늘 아래 펼쳐진 기복이 진 언덕의 그림엽서 같은 경치로 보답을 받았어. 비록 내 다리에 쥐가 나기도 했고 아픈 근육 경련을 느끼기도 했지만 감격한 나머지 내 눈에 이슬이 맺혔지. 우리는 목이 쉴 때까지 소리를 질렀어. 비록 다리가 풀려서 산을 내려올 때 힘들었지만 하산하면서 행복했어. 설악산을 종주하는 데 삼일이 걸렸지만 나는 우리가 행복한 시간을 보냈다고 믿어. We now know that thunder, lightning, and (rain, snow and hail, collectively known as) 'precipitation' are not caused by gods being angry, but are normal natural phenomena. Nevertheless I'm positive as to the existence of God. Whenever I climb many mountains, I believe in God. It is as if to the ancient Greeks, Mt. Etna was the realm of Vulcan, god of fire, and home to the mythological one-eyed monster, Cyclops. Isn't it the reason that people are reverting to a simpler view of nature? 이제 우리는 천둥, 번개, 그리고 강우(비, 눈, 우박을 집합적으로 강우라 함)가 신의 분노에 의해 발생되는 것이 아니라 정상적인 자연현상이라는 사실을 알고 있어. 그럼에도 불구하고 나는 신의 존재를 확신하고 있지. 산을 오를 때마다 나는 신을 믿게 되거든. 이는 마치 고대 그리스인들에게는 에트나산이 불의 신, 불칸의 왕국이자 신화 속의 외눈박이 괴물 키클롭스가 사는 곳이기도 했던 것과 같은 것이야. 이것이 바로 사람들이 보다 소박한 자연 경관을 다시 찾고 있는 이유가 아닐까?
